Assorted Maki Sushi

Maki sushi is very popular all over the world and is loved by kids and adults as well.  Its very filling and you can use any ingredient you like.  It does not have to look good just quick and easy to fill the belly.

Start by getting all your ingredients,  use anything you can find around the house as filling.  Make around 4 cups of sushi rice or more if you have lots of people to feed.  The only equipment you really need is a rice cooker, bamboo roller, knife and cutting board.  The seaweed paper can be found at most Asian supermarkets or even some regular supermarkets at the Asian section.

While you are waiting for the rice you can start cutting your ingredients.  The idea is to cut everything into strips so you can roll into the rice.  I used mayo and made some tuna salad and also crab meat salad to use as filling.  I also made egg salad but this is not very good as a filling since it falls out when you squeeze the maki together.  Use some plastic wrap to wrap your bamboo roller so the rice wont stick to it.

Once the rice is finish cooking,  let it cool down just enough to touch.  Then you season your rice with rice vinegar, salt and sugar, and optional roasted sesame seeds.   This makes the rice already tasty and looks more better.   Mix the rice with the seasoning and let it cool some more.

Place a sheet of seaweed on the bamboo roller and put a layer of rice over the seaweed.  Then add the fillings in,  you can make different combinations to suit your taste.  Fold the bottom piece of seaweed over your ingredients then use the roller to roll the seaweed into a log shape.

Now all you have to do is cut the maki into bite size pieces and serve on a plate.  If you are really hungry you do not even need to cut it,  just eat the whole roll of maki as is.  This is great for lunch since its filling and easy to make.

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 can tuna
  • 1 Japanese mayonnaise
  • 1 regular mayonnaise

Instructions

  • Start by cooking your rice with the rice cooker.
  • While waiting for the rice to be done you can start cutting all the ingredients. The concept is to cut everything into long pieces.
  • Once the rice is done, you have to take it out of the cooker to let it cool.
  • When it gets to be just warm enough to touch, you can add the rice seasonings.
Add salt, sugar and rice vinegar to the rice and mic well. The roasted sesame is optional, I put it in because it makes the rice look better.
  • Make tuna salad like you would if you are making a tuna sandwich. Spice it up anyway you want or just use mayo.
  • Cut some imitation crab meat into strips and mix together with mayo in a bowl.
  • Make egg salad like you would if you are making an egg salad sandwich. Spice it up anyway you want or just use mayo.
  • Heat up some eel, I got the already made frozen ones from the supermarket. After that just cut into strips.
  • Start with placing a piece of seaweed paper on the bamboo roller, add a layer of rice up top.
  • Add different fillings depending on your taste, then roll into small logs.
  • After the log is nice and firm, you can cut into bite size pieces. Place on plate or directly put into mouth, enjoy.

Notes

The main ingredients are usually the same but the fillings can be anything you want it to be.  Use plastic wrap for your bamboo roller so the rice won’t stick to it.   When Cutting the maki, if the rice is sticking to your knife you can add some water or oil to the knife to make it less messy.
