Rainbow Family Restaurant
One nice Saturday morning my friend Will, and I went to this amazing family restaurant for brunch. This place is located in the heart of downtown Oshawa on Simcoe street near a tank and a Holiday Inn hotel. The place was very small with vintage signs and a modest bright color store sign. The location was good and parking was easily available. Parking is free on weekends which is awesome!!!
Once you step inside it was like going back in time, the place was even smaller inside and everything look like it was from the 1960s. We sat down at the table near the door and help our self to the menus. Just looking at the decoration and the menu I start to learn about the history of this restaurant and the town of Oshawa. The restaurant opened in 1958 during the time when the GMC plant was the biggest thing in town. During this time this town grew from the workers at the plant. This restaurant gave me a very cozy and welcoming feel too bad the seats are a little small and not very comfortable. The waitress from the picture came to serve us and we ordered some coffee before our food. The coffee came in a very familiar cup just like the one from the many pictures online. After looking through the menu and talking things over with my friend I know what to order. I ordered an Elvis burger and cheese omelette since everything on the menu sounds so good I just had to order a little more. The coffee was also excellent and it had infinite refills.
Finally after a short wait our food finally came, I was overwhelmed by the amount of food that arrived. Finally the food review will begin. The Elvis burger was something I have never tried before, it had bacon, cheese and peanut butter. For the cheese omelette it came with home fries and a swirly bread. FYI Swirly bread is also called Rye bread, pretty cool. Lets start with the burger, since I was the most skeptical of it at first. I didn’t put any other condiments on it and just ate it as is. My first bite was very crunchy but very hot so I wasn’t able to quite taste it. I took a few more bites until I can taste the delicious mixture of cheese, bacon, beef, and the peanut butter. The taste was AMAZING, the unity of cheese, bacon and peanut butter works in perfect harmony. For the next few seconds I just kept biting and biting and didn’t stop to breath or talk much. All the way until I got to the last bit I realized it’s almost gone, so sad, gotta slow down and savor the last bite. When I finish it seems everything else became tasteless, maybe due to the overpowering taste of the burger.
I took a piece of toast, it looks nice but was a little hard and also not enough butter. Good thing my buddy Will gave me the rest of his butter. The home fries was really good, have the perfect balance of crispy outside and soft inside. There was even a small piece of bacon in the fries which was a nice bonus. Finally it was time for my omelette, however sadly I am almost at full capacity. Still I will not back down, since this omelette patiently waited for so long. I cut into it with my utensils but it was not what I expected. It was more cooked then I would liked and also the cheese was not melted enough. I continued eating it along with some home fries but very soon realized I am at my limits. After a second cup of coffee i am ready to call it quits.
Finally I am done, both mind and body very satisfied. My friends breakfast look amazing as well, next time I will surely give that a try. We ask for a box to put my leftovers and went to pay our respects to the cashier. Price was very reasonable for the amount of food I got. The food was very good and unique so i gave it a 4.5 stars out of 5. The service was very good but nothing extraordinary so i will give it a 5 out of 5. The atmosphere was great but the seating was very small and felt too cramped for myself so i will only give this a 4 out of 5. Overall this restaurant is a Gem and deserve better if the location was bigger. I give restaurant a 4.5 stars and will definitely recommend anyone in the area to come for breakfast or lunch. Here is a link to their website for more details and menu.
I came back here a second time with my friend Jake this time. This time the restaurant was more busy so we sat in the back. There was a lot of pictures on the walls and much to see. I ordered the Barbarian, since I love the breakfast meat and this have it all. The portion was humongous, but I was very confident I can become a true barbarian. I started from the top and make my way around the pile of meat. The sausage and the pea meal bacon was absolutely out of this world. The taste was very juicy and not very heavy, this meal is perfectly named. My only complaint is that the plate was so small, I had trouble moving all the food around. After around 20 mins I was at my limits, this truly is a meal for a Barbarian. I had left some pea meal bacon and a sausage left, I failed at the barbarian challenge. Even though this breakfast was so god damn delicious, I will not order this again since the portion was too big. This breakfast will be fine to share with someone along with some pancakes or french toast.
